Birchwood Sewage Lagoon Expansion

Featured Project

PROJECT BACKGROUND:
The Birchwood Sewage Lagoon is located in the northeast area of the Brazeau County near the intersection of Township Road 494 and Range Road 55. The sewage lagoon was restricted to accept only sewage generated by the Birchwood Village Greens Condo Association because of the limited capacity of the lagoon. The sewage lagoon was undersized for the volumes generated by the community. Canadian Consulting Engineers was retained by the Brazeau County to design and construction of Birchwood Sewage Lagoon Expansion.

PROJECT OBJECTIVE:
The project’s objective was to increase sewage lagoon’s capacity.

PROJECT CHALLENGES:

The proposed sewage lagoon site was bounded by Modeste Creek. Overall average elevation relief from uplands in area of proposed sewage lagoon expansion to creek level was about 40m. The slope stability and land sliding were challenges to the sewage lagoon expansion.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS:

The project increased sewage lagoon capacity approximately from 17,000m³ to 54,000m³. The major components of the project include the following:
• Approximately 77,326m³ common excavation
• Approximately 32,796m² of new 60mil HDPE Liner including gas vents
• Interconnect structures complete including plug valve and tie-in connections
• Outlet and outfall structures complete including plug valve and tie-in connections

PROJECT SERVICES:
Canadian Consulting Engineers provided preliminary design, detailed design, project management and construction administration.
